ANCESTRAL WISDOM

A Tribute to the Culture of Raicilla

There is a plant with ancient origins,
whose powers open the door
between the sky and the human being.

From the coast to the mountains,
from the north to the south,
the maguey exists in different forms.

So significant and with endless uses,
the sweet plant gives us its life,
leaving all its wisdom in our hands.

A sacred flavor from the spirit of the earth…

First, it gives us its heart,
in complicity with the earth and fire,
and baptizes their union with the name “mezcal.”

Its love flows with water timidly,
taking time to acquaint itself,
slowly opening the sparks of its soul.

They learn to elevate tepache
to a spirited beverage;
a transcendental process,
known as “vino de mezcal”.

Amidst travels, gatherings and mezcal,
the story is shared,
traveling to distant communities,
up on the hills and by the seaside,
spreading the word of mezcal.

For a while, everything was fine,
and they continued producing their raicilla,
until suddenly…

…The antagonist returns.
This time much fiercer,
declaring raicilla as FORBIDDEN.

Over time, they come together,
until they are inseparable.
A fusion that is given
the name “tepache de maguey.”

This story followed its course for several centuries,
until a naval ship appears on the coast…
A convergence of cultures
and ancient knowledge is shared,
more valuable than gold.

Like in all good tales,
the antagonist appears,
imposing a tax on mezcal
to promote their foreign culture.

To preserve their history,
the community tells the Spaniards:
“We do not make mezcal from the heart of the maguey,
we make wine that comes from the maguey’s offspring, from the root.”

And that’s how the name “raicilla” is born,
to evade excessive tax payments.

As a result, the masters decide to flee,
hiding in the most remote places,
along the coast and in the mountains,
to keep the secrets within family and the community;
preserving its flavor, its historical taste.

Today we extend homage and infinite gratitude
to the guardians of this ancestral wisdom.
They made it possible to preserve this Atavic beverage,
which with every sip, opens once again,
the portal between the sky and the human being.
